Career day is an annual event at High tech High that grades 9-10 participate in. Some requirement of this event is to Email/ Cold call business professionals with the same career you might be interested in having in the future.
You have to spend a minimum of 5 hours with your career day shadow and spend a day with them doing what they would do on a normal day. For me, I am interested in the parks service so I shadowed Lindsey Stienwachs, who is the Recreation and Lands Officer for The Cleveland National Forest. She works on and off field so we really weren't in her office for majority of the day. For this certain Job position you work on collaborating with others, your respond to a lot of emails and you over see many different events going on. For this job you have to come to work in uniform , seeing as you spend a lot of time outdoors. The dress code isn't very office professional which would make sense. I really spent the entirety of the day driving around with my one career day shadow , yet I did have the opportunity to talk to people with various other job titles. I talked o a volunteer who was surveying he pacific crest trail to gather the number of people beginning the hike each day. I also talked to one of the few female employees on the forest fire survive team. I also to talked to forestry technician who is essentially a park ranger. I think that I really haven't learned anything yet with my school that would prepare me for a job similar to the one I shadowed. I Think once I take biology It may get better. My mentor got her masters from Slippery Rock university on the parks service, which is what led her to her job. Internships with the parks service or other conservation services is highly smiled upon when applying to this job. This is definitely a career I am interested in pursuing or at least one similar. Some insight that I gained form career day was that this job is very under payed, similar to teaching positions. I would love to work in the outdoors because it is something I am passionate about and this job gives you a lot of freedom and flexibility. I really loved my career day this year and there isn't anything that I would have wanted to do differently. I want to make sure to do something I am just as passionate about for next year.
